About Peter Kalbfleisch
Peter Kalbfleisch is a dedicated Vice Principal with the Waterloo Region District School Board. He entered administration in 2018 after a 19-year career as a secondary school teacher and coach in the same district. He graduated from McMaster University in 1993 before earning a Diploma in Education from the University of Canberra in 1999.
Peter’s educational philosophy is focused on building caring and compassionate global citizens in a learning environment where all students have the opportunity to excel. He is known for his leadership in creating spaces where both teachers and students can show up as their true selves each day.
Between 2012 and 2017, he served as the program head for the Fast Forward program at Laurel Heights Secondary School (formerly SJAM). The program provides academic and social support to students who are out of phase academically with their grade level. He created learning opportunities for staff to optimize their preparation and performance in the program, and he implemented curricula focused on enhanced participation and engagement.
Peter began his teaching career at a vocational high school called University Heights. His deep commitment to serving students with unique academic needs began here, as well as his seeking of leadership opportunities. Along with teaching math, science, and physical education, Peter served as student council lead teacher, coach and student activity director at University Heights.
Peter’s commitment to his students goes beyond the classroom. While at Laurel Heights, he created a program called Charity Begins at Home, raising money for low-income students in order to remove barriers and provide equal opportunities in all school activities.
Peter is also involved in charitable activities in the community. Along with a group of friends, Peter created KW Legacy, an organization set up to raise money for local non-profits and scholarship funds. The organization has raised over $800,000 through their Golf For Scholarships program, hosting charitable golf tournaments where leadership awards are handed out to local high school students. They also host an annual Top Home Chef event, raising over $150,000 for the Waterloo Suicide Prevention Council (WSPC).
At home, Peter is a family-oriented father, husband, and son who enjoys multiple sports and outdoor activities. He also loves jarring vegetables and jams from his garden and making craft beers in his home brewery, and handing out the fruits of his labour to his lifelong friends in the community.
